Spousal / common-law partner sponsorship
There are two ways of sponsoring spouses and common-law partners:
1
Sponsorship from overseas under the Family Class, or
2
Sponsorship from inside Canada under the Spouse or Common-Law Partner in Canada Class.
Who is eligible as Sponsor?
A Canadian citizen or permanent resident, who is at least 18 years of age, resides in Canada, and has filed a complete application to sponsor a member of the Family Class or a member of the Spouse or Common-Law Partner in Canada Class.
Who can be sponsored for Permanent Residence?
- Your spouse or common-law partner who lives in Canada with you, and their dependent children if any
- Your spouse, common-law partner or conjugal partner who lives overseas, and their dependent children if any
- Your own dependent children.
A sponsor who became a permanent resident by having been sponsored to Canada as a spouse or partner may not sponsor another foreign national as a new spouse or partner in the five-year period after becoming a permanent resident.
